Western Shorts. Ten true stories of white children in Indian captivity, the inner conflict of an Indian raised as a white, the pain of a witness to a massacre are concluded with a scene which fairly sweats poetic justice: Buffalo Bill's filming of the last great Indian battle, and the Indian extras' futile gesture of rebellion. The author parades facts drily before us, lapsing now and again into italicized emotions, sometimes addressed to the subject, sometimes to the reader. The cumulative effect of the repetition of similar incidents and reactions is numbness, since neither excitement nor suspense is generated by the narrative.
